In the world of BMX Freestyle, where Daniel Dhers competes, he may be considered an old timer, but he is still up there with the best of them.

The 37-year-old Venezuelan competes in the Nakamura Rim at X Games Chiba, Japan, against a 21-year-old Japanese competitor.

Many of his opponents admire and respect him, but they also recognize his danger. Dhers has experienced everything there is to experience in his field of sport.

The ‘Godfather of BMX’ has won five gold medals at the X Games since his first in 2007.

He won silver in the Olympic debut of his sport last year in Tokyo, something he never imagined he’d do.

The Secret to Olympic Success

Dhers, a US citizen based in North Carolina, is ready and willing to put in extra work to maintain her competitive edge.

Because of his advanced years, he needs to take special precautions when pushing his body to its limits, but that doesn’t stop him from posting the details of his strength training sessions online to show his dedication.

It’s a lot of work,” he admitted to Red Bull. I take care of myself by going to the gym regularly and increasing my strength and endurance so that I can bike every day.

My day is structured around riding, and I do anything I can to keep riding at a high level or improve my skills.

Dhers is driven to compete with younger athletes in part because he wants to represent his country after coming in second in Tokyo, behind Logan Martin of Australia.

The cycling hero returned home to Venezuela to revel in the country’s historic Olympic haul, which was led by triple jump champion Yulimar Rojas.

Given the ‘counter-culture’ reputation of his sport, Dhers anticipated a cool but muted welcome.

Upon arriving in Caracas, however, he understood the significance of his medal and the work he had done for the country.

As he was enthusiastically greeted, a giant banner bearing a photo of his face reflected the beaming smiles back at him. Dhers began his triumphant journey from the airport, visiting cities throughout the globe to the cheers of his adoring followers.

Dhers took his legion of fans on a bike tour of the city, and they rode to the western Caracas neighbourhood of Cota 905, where the BMXer performed some of his signature feats.

Last Words

It meant a lot to be able to give even a small amount to the satisfaction that sports can provide to a country that is continuously going through challenges, he thought.

Later in December, while visiting Tachira state, people created a 10-meter-high figure in his likeness to celebrate the New Year.
