The Beginnings

Philip Alfred Mickelson entered this world on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California. Philip Mickelson Sr. was a navy aviator and airline pilot. In his youth, Mickelson lived in both San Diego, California, and Scottsdale, Arizona.

He took up golf at his father’s urging and eventually adopted his swing. This explains why, despite being a righty in everyday life, he uses a lefty stroke. In 1988, he completed high school at University of San Diego.

Professional Origins

After receiving a full golf scholarship to Arizona State University, where he excelled right away, Mickelson became professional. He was named the most outstanding college golfer three years in a row (1990–1992), and he won three consecutive NCAA individual titles.

Mickelson was the second golfer in NCAA history to be named to the first team All-America for four consecutive years, and he won a total of 16 tournaments during his undergraduate career. His collegiate graduation was in June of 1992.

Work Experience

Off the golf course, Mickelson has also been quite successful. In 1991, as an amateur, he won the Northern Telecom Open, a PGA tour tournament. He turned pro immediately following his graduation from college since his win in Tucson in 1991 exempted him from having to go through the PGA tour’s qualification process.

Even though he didn’t win any majors between 1999 and 2003, he had 17 top-ten results, including six runner-up or third-place showings. In 2004, during his twelfth season on the PGA tour, he won his first major tournament.

Mickelson had two sports hernia surgeries in 2016, but he bounced back in record time to finish tied for 21st at the CareerBuilder Challenge. The 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am victory marked his 44th overall PGA Tour victory.

Also, at age 48, he was the oldest victor in that competition. For the first time since 1989, he declared in December 2019 that he would skip the Waste Management Phoenix Open in favour of the Saudi International. During the 2020 February competition in Saudi Arabia, he finished in a tie for third.

Over the course of his career, he has won over 40 PGA tournaments, including four Majors (the 2004 Masters, the 2005 PGA Championship, the 2006 Masters, and the 2010 Masters). Currently, he ranks among the world’s elite and most well-liked professional golfers.

Earnings and Praise

Over the course of his career, Phil Mickelson has won over $100 million in tournament prizes. His overall earnings surpass $1 billion to date. Among these sums is the $200 million he received in June 2022 from the Saudi-backed LIV league (more on that in the following paragraph).

About $50 million of his annual earnings come from endorsement deals, making his total earnings anywhere from $40 million to $50 million.

Mickelson has won $87 million from tournaments, making him the second-highest paid golfer of all time, behind only Tiger Woods ($110 million). Until 2015, he has earned $30 million from tournaments, ranking third all-time behind only Vijay Singh ($70 million).

KPMG, ExxonMobil, Titleist, Ford, Enbrel, Callaway, Amgen, Grayhawk, Rolex, and Intrepid Financial Partners are among Mickelson’s major sponsors. He first promoted Enbrel in 2010 after using it to treat his psoriatic arthritis. His sponsorship deal with Barclays lasted 15 years till 2016.

At about the same time, the SEC added him as a “relief defendant” to an insider trading complaint. He did not face any criminal charges. It is estimated that Phil Mickelson made $40 million between June 2017 and June 2018 between salary and endorsements.

Between the months of June 2018 and June 2019, he made roughly $50 million. This includes the $9 million he won in a head-to-head showdown against Tiger Woods.

Payoffs and Controversy in the Saudi League

Phil got himself into a little bit of a scandal in February 2022 over the LIV Saudi Golf League. While admitting that the new league offers a big commercial opportunity over the PGA, Phil used an interview to criticise Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. As a result of the interview, Phil was dropped by KPMG, his longest and most valued sponsor.

The comments, however, did not seem to deter the LIV planners. There were rumours that Phil had secured a $200 million contract to play in the LIV league in June of 2022.

Internal Affairs

In 1996, Mickelson wed his wife Amy. Their children are Amanda Brynn (born in June 1999), Evan Samuel (born in March 2003), and Sophia Isabel (October 2001).

Actual Property

Phil and Amy bought a house in La Jolla, California, for $1.65 million in 1999. A total of $2.745,000.00 was received for the home’s sale in 2012.

Phil and his family resided at Rancho Santa Fe, California for a long period of time. They spent over $6,000,000 for a 4.55-acre plot of land in 2001. They put it up for sale in 2008 for an exorbitant $12.2 million. In January of 2015, they settled for $5.75 million.

Phil paid an undisclosed amount in January 2020 for a vacant lot in Jupiter, Florida. Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan are among his new neighbours.
