The college basketball tournament’s seeding has been determined. March Madness has arrived, and on Sunday night, CBS Sports welcomed Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Southland Conference and chair of the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Committee, to discuss the selection process.

Burnett Appeared on Television
Every year, the selection procedure is met with criticism because some clubs are chosen despite having weaker credentials, while others are left out while having a vocal supporter base.
Soon after the NCAA Tournament bracket was revealed, Burnett appeared on television to discuss the deliberations that went into determining the 68 teams that will compete.
Burnett expressed doubt about the smoothness of the situation. The road is never smooth, though.

It was due in large part to the fact that this week we’ve been treated to some fantastic basketball, and many of us stayed up late today watching the various conference tournaments. We prepared for any eventuality, as we knew these conference tournaments were crucial and would require close monitoring.
There were “actually no hiccups,” but rather “a lot of teams that were always under consideration that were playing deep into their tournaments.”
Insights From the Head of the NCAA Committee in Charge of Selection
When asked if the bracket was changed after the last conference finals on Sunday, Tom Burnett was open about the lengthy discussion that preceded it.
According to Burnett, “we had to look at around 10 different possibilities by the time we got into bracketing today.” This meant that the selection committee had to examine ten separate seed lists and brackets. Naturally, we had to go through today’s results to gather the last bits of information needed to finish the process, narrowing the field to the two brackets and the ultimate result that we presented tonight.

Burnett Shed Light on the NCAA Tournament Selection Process by Discussing How the Job has been less Difficult for him to Do over the Years.
As we’ve discussed before, enlarging our committee has proven to be incredibly helpful, and Burnett agrees. There has been a lot more press about our conferences, and I believe it has helped the process. Of course, we’ve already established that our group places a premium on returning to business as usual with a national competition. As soon as this week is through, we’re on the road.
